Do you Facebook?

I am wanting to ask members that frequent both Facebook and here a question.

I find Facebook great for story telling and a few other things but not good at helping someone that has a problem. There does not seem to be any way to have good continuity of care there.

My thought was to direct people over here where I can help better. Maybe a recurring reminder that the tech pages are here and many long time willing members to help them? I am here also. :) OR

If there is some way to change how faceplace works so it is easier for me to keep up with mainly the Tech threads I care about please let me know?

Not very FB-savvy, can't help you.
I do agree that continuity and follow-up are not straightforward.

I go on FB more often than I like. But I agree with you regarding any history of a problem. It's mostly for someone to post a picture of their bike and look for others to "like" it. Not a scenery picture either, just a closeup pic of their bike. It lacks depth and substance.

The only reason I'm on there really is a church thrift "shop" where you can post things you want to give away. If FB went away tomorrow, I'd not miss it.

Chris

As Chris said I am also on more than I like. I agree it is almost worthless when working through problems, finding something that happened in the past, and a lot of the time the quality of the advice is questionable. The only good use for me lately is the marketplace section. It seems to have replaced Craigslist and a lot of Ebay when looking to buy items.

Here is my cursory comments on your question. This answer to this question is like peeling an onion, with many layers.

IMO Facebook and web forum functionality are on polar opposite ends of the social media functionality continuum. Both have a useful purpose. I feel the significant drawback to FB when it comes to documenting and working through an issue is that it is a stream of consciousness flow of information. Subscribed info sources will show in your personal feed based on FB algorithms. As more info from these sources is created, topics from past days is pushed down in the personal feed, making it increasingly more difficult to find relevant info. Web forums use a hierarchical approach to organizing data that remains mostly fixed that includes:
Categories > Forums > Threads > Posts

Most forums have useful features that include these 2 and more...
  1. Notifications can be set to flag Thread activity
  2. New posts feature will display all new posts since last visit

From a COG perspective…
I feel like….
FB is like a CRM
( sales and marketing)
Forum is ERP
(operations)
😁

I've never had a FB account, I never just got the warm and fuzzies about it. I was kinda early to web surfing, back in the days of chat rooms. I was chatting with bud one night and said.." can you image what one of these things would be like if everybody was on it??" Ya, end of civilization..

An official COG tech youtube channel......

I get the odd feeling that we are both way to familiar with the old IRC chatrooms.

I'm in our facebook group, and have answered the odd question here and there. There is another group that I'm a member of that centers around the C10 that was a fair amount of help and information before I looked into joining COG.

As far as FB Connie dites I think the Kawasaki Concours 14/ 1400 GTR Enthusiasts is the best one. A lot of files, some very knowledgeable people. I still prefer the forum but the FB page has a lot more activity. The COG FB site is meh.

If you read through the FB Concours page, you'll find that replies to requests for advise on issues is:

1) peppered with meaningless comments
2) very hard to follow meaningfully
3) is often WAY off base and often flat out wrong.

This forum is light years better and has concise and meaningful advise.

I stayed out of it for quite some time for the same reason.
The toxicity has been cleared up, along with the disappearance of those responsible for it. It now seems to reflect COG's character pretty well.

Nope. Never have. While traveling it's a disadvantage as some restaurants use FB exclusively and menus are not accessible. Market Place or whatever it's called appears to be better than Craig's List. My daughter makes it work for her enterprises; everyone seems to know what's going on with her business in a positive and profitable way.

I've bought & sold through Marketplace. Huge advantage over Craigslist is you can check the seller's profile and get some idea if they're legit.
I've had a couple of "buyers" that were clearly not.

It is a mystery to me that folks think FB Mktplace is better than CL. I've used CL for as many years as it has been around, selling vehicles, parts, household stuff etc and can't recall any bad experience, while meeting a bunch of very decent people.

FB Mkt OTOH is filled with more bogus ads than legit and has useless search, sort and filter functions. Profiles can be hacked and copied so offer no real confirmation of validity. I've experimented with ads and they've been met with ridiculous responses or reposted under other posters names.

I am also mystified what the payoff is behind this scammy mess, and fail to see how FB earns so much money that Zuck can buy an island.

I saw a post from @Steve in sunny Fla yesterday in one of the ZG1000 groups. He was raiding a bit of hell because one of their admins chopped a post with a reel attached. If I read it right, the reel was not to be taken seriously. The group has been handy to me over the last year, though I don't visit it on purpose all that often since I joined COG. I've only ever had to block one person from the group after he made some wise-ass comment about hoping I break my foot. Some people are just assholes.

Well I tried. I think we have a recurring post over there that points them back here and me for any real tech help.

I was watching a post over there. Because of the way it works this guy got 45 replies but only one or two had a decent full answer. All the others posted without reading the comments or knowing what they were talking about really.

Typical

I am amused and alarmed to see so many posts - "bike won't start - what's the problem? " A complete lack of awareness, initiative and respect.

Hey G, my bike won't start, and I cannot find the problem.

Oh. Wait.

The gas tank is off of the bike the the fuel valve from my hanging tank is turned off. That may very well be it.

Sorry. Couldn't help it. However, you are right. Lot's of "My bike won't run right" with absolutely no mention of "symptoms" or things that they may have already tried.

I don’t believe there is an intentional lack of respect rather everyone starts somewhere. For those that have a desire to learn they will be very successful alongside other COGgers here.

For others they purchase or are gifted a non-running C-10, hear of the fun and reliable machines they are to only be stifled by every dealership around refusing to look at the machine - due to age and lack of profitability.

So people become frustrated and turn to the very best Concours resource there is: COG.

Don’t take it personally, encourage all to join as a full member, embrace the technical articles and enormous resource of postings here. Some will choose to educate themselves and others will find COGgers willing to perform some work for them.

Inside every Concours owner there is a COGger wanting to get out! Let’s empower that inner energy and grow the community!
