While out on another run Wednesday in basically the same direction as one of the CanAm dealers in the area, I decided to make the full 25-mile jaunt to check on an issue with the Ryker’s keys I’d just found out about. Working through the idiosyncrasies of a “new” machine can be like experiencing Xmas every day, or like MOB used to say, “A Surprise In Every Box.”
Keys for this machine aren’t like the traditional key as we know them. It’s a little plastic module with jaws that slip over a ball receptacle on the side of the machine. Once captured and clamped on the machine, an embedded chip can send a unique code (the key) via an RF signal to the machine to “unlock” it. You can then access the front glove box, start the machine, drive it, etc. Apparently when the 2022-year models were being produced there was a chip shortage so the encoded keys couldn’t be made. To continue production and delivery, BRP basically just made the keys into a magnetic “key” with no coding function what-so-ever. Apparently, the chip shortage problem was taken care of, and the smart keys have been available for a little over a year.
Initially, the question didn’t register with their service manager, but he persevered in his search through the model’s recall service history from BRP. He eventually found it, and it appears that the freebie service is good until sometime in 2027. He said that “the key” had to be programmed into the bike’s system, but he also gave me the impression that my existing keys already had that capability. **I'm concerned that he may be a little confused on that part of it.
He said they couldn’t take care of it now (they were extremely busy with new bikes going out the door) and suggested I make an appointment for some time after the holiday rush, which I will.
** If you look in BRP’s on-line parts diagram for the 2022 Ryker Sport, they only list one key type, a “Dess Key, RF Type”. Nothing mentioned about any “magnetic type”. I’d really hate for them to get part way through the programming function only to find they don’t have the correct key installed. I’m going ask him to please get a verbal verification from BRP just to make sure before we get to that point so they have the correct keys available.

The service manager also mentioned that there was an open safety recall for machines in my VIN number range dealing with the fuel pump. I checked on this when I got home through the NHTSA’s website, and sure enough, there it was. I also contacted the PO and she said she didn't know anything about it, which was a little disconcerting since the bike had been into the selling dealer several times for routine service.
And finally, is the below a coincidence, or what?
Today's mail brought me a recall notice from BRP about the problem with the fuel pump. I can only assume they got to me as being the new owner through Virginia's DMV. Gonna make the recall process a whole lot easier with the dealer. Guess I'll get it taken care of at the same time I get "real" RF-type keys for the bike.
While I was typing this, another owner on a Ryker Forum sent me a copy of a letter from BRP (dated Oct, 2024) she got off of FB talking about the chip shortage issue now being resolved. I'll carry a copy of that letter into the dealer too.
